Description

Egyptian hermit, founder, and miracle worker. Apollo was born in Egypt and spent forty years in the desert region around Thebes. He then founded a community of monks in Hermopol, Egypt, ultimately numbering five hundred, and became their abbot. Apollo was eighty years old when he made this foundation. He was noted for his miracles.

Saint Apollo of Egypt or Saint Apollo the Hermit. He was a Christian monk and ascetic, known for his piety and dedication to a life of solitude and prayer.

Saint Apollo was born around the 3rd or 4th century in Egypt, a region that was home to many early Christian saints and hermits. He is especially known for his role in the desert monastic movement in Egypt, which had a significant influence on Christian monasticism as a whole. This movement was focused on seeking a deeper connection with God through prayer, fasting, and living a life of solitude, often in the Egyptian desert.

His story is linked to that of other desert fathers and hermits who sought to live in isolation, away from the distractions of the world, to grow in spiritual strength. Saint Apollo lived for a time as a hermit, and his life became an example for other Christians who wanted to follow the monastic path.

Though not as widely known as some other early Christian saints, Saint Apollo’s life and example of asceticism have had an influence on the development of Christian monastic traditions. His feast day is celebrated in some Christian traditions, although it is not universally recognized.
