Description
Saint Sophianos, was an important religious figure of his time in the region of Epirus and is considered the precursor of Kosma and Saint Nectarios of Terpos who together fought to teach Christ in Eastern Illyricum (Epirus) and intercepted the Islamisation of the Greek inhabitants. Born probably in Polytsiani village (Pogoni region Northern Epirus). He was known since made bishop Dryinoupolis (Gjirokastra district, Delvino, Himara).
1672 AD He founded the local monastery of St. Athanasius school. At the time he lived, the Islamization was particularly common. He wanted to deal with this situation toured from village to village to convince people to maintain their traditions and religion and many Christians of the continent returned to the ancestral faith and stressed the Greeks. All of Epirus historians say that if there was St. Sophianos, Muslims will establish up Nafpaktos. In 1711 AD, a few months before his death, he resigns from the sacerdotal functions and becomes a monk to be attributed solely to kiryktiko and missionary work.
