Description
Saint Cyprian and Justina are saints of the Orthodox church who are honored on October 2nd. They were martyred in 304 in Nicomedia. Their story comes from Simeon the Translator.
Justina was the daughter of a pagan priest from Antioch. But she became a Christian and made her parents Christians as well. A young man, Aglaidas, wanted to make her his own. Because he did not succeed, he turned to a magician, Cyprian.Cyprian’s efforts failed, because Justina made her cross, lived a Christian life and thus defeated the demons. In the end, Cyprian realized his mistake, freed himself from Satan and became an Orthodox Christian. He became a deacon, priest and bishop.His story is also mentioned by Gregory of Nazianzus, who however confuses him with Cyprian of Carthage, a mistake made by many. It is certain, however, that there was no bishop of Antioch named Cyprian.
During the persecution of Diocletian, Cyprian and Justina were taken to Damascus where they were tortured. Because their faith endured, they were transferred to Diocletian in Nicomedia. There, by his order, they were beheaded.
