Description

Saint Anastasios was a native of Nafplion and a skilled painter by profession. He became engaged there to the daughter of a Christian and in a few days he heard some errors about his betrothed and left her. The daughter’s relatives cast magic on him so that he would love her and take her. So in a short time under the influence of the magic, the young man lost his reason and was going from here to there. When the Turks saw him, so strange, they made him convert. But God took pity on him and in a few days gave him his health. And coming to his senses, he understands that he is a Turk and that he was wearing a white sari on his head. He immediately throws it on the ground and begins to shout with a loud voice and boldly in the crowd of Turks that he was, is and will forever be a Christian. As soon as the Turks saw that he repented, they rushed upon him and, beating and pushing, brought him to the judge. The judge tried with various tricks, sometimes flattering and sometimes bullying, to make him deny the Christian faith. But the Martyr did not take all this into account and unwaveringly boldly said that he does not deny the Lord Jesus Christ, the true God, but believes and worships Him as his creator and savior, while believing in Allah he does not need it and abhors it. When the judge heard this he ordered that he be beheaded. But the Turks did not listen to him and when they took him out of the yard they rushed at him like the Jews used to do to the first martyr Stephen and some with sticks, some with swords, some with knives pierced the body of the Martyr until they cut it into small pieces. Thus it was completed on February 1, 1655 AD. (according to others in 1654 AD) the blessed Anastasios received the crown of martyrdom and now rejoices in the dance of the Martyrs in the glory of the Triune God. By Royal Decree of November 14, 1935 AD. February 1st was established as a total holiday for the Nafplio shops.
Masses were composed by the former Metropolitan of Carpathians and Kasos Nilos Smyrniotopoulos and Hymnographer Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis.
