Legacy:
Saint John of Capistrano was an Italian Franciscan friar, theologian, and preacher. Known for his fervent sermons and dedication to reforming the Church, he traveled extensively across Europe.
He gained renown as a military chaplain during the Battle of Belgrade (1456), where he inspired Christian forces to victory against the Ottoman Empire. Because of this, he is often referred to as the “Soldier Saint.”
He was canonized in 1690 and is venerated as the patron saint of military chaplains and jurists.

Significance:
The mission, established by Spanish Franciscans, is one of the 21 missions in California designed to spread Christianity among Native Americans. Known as the “Jewel of the Missions,” it features beautiful architecture, gardens, and historic artifacts.
It is also famous for the annual return of the swallows, which migrate to the area every spring around March 19, the feast day of St. Joseph.
