Saint Monica (c. 331–387 AD) was an early Christian saint and the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential Christian theologians in history. Monica is celebrated for her devout faith, her perseverance in prayer, and her tireless efforts to guide her son toward Christianity.

Monica was born in North Africa, in what is now modern-day Algeria, to Christian parents. She married a pagan Roman official named Patricius, who was known for his temper and moral failings. Despite her husband’s character, Monica remained a loving wife, and through her patience and prayers, she helped bring him to Christianity before his death.

Monica’s greatest spiritual struggle, however, was with her son, Augustine. As a young man, Augustine led a wild and sinful life, indulging in vices and rejecting the Christian faith that his mother held dear. Monica, deeply troubled by her son’s waywardness, prayed fervently for his conversion, seeking the guidance of bishops and clergy. She even once had a famous encounter with Saint Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, who reassured her with the words, “The child of those tears shall never perish.”

Her prayers were eventually answered when Augustine converted to Christianity in 386 AD. Shortly after his conversion, he was baptized by Saint Ambrose. Monica’s life is often viewed as an example of a mother’s love, perseverance, and unwavering faith in God’s grace.

Saint Monica passed away in 387 AD in the city of Ostia, near Rome, shortly after seeing her son’s conversion. She was canonized as a saint due to her exemplary life of prayer, devotion, and maternal love. Her feast day is celebrated on August 27, and she is the patron saint of mothers, wives, and those who are troubled by the waywardness of their children.
