Description
Assisi is famous for being the city where were born and lived Saint Francesco and Saint Chiara, where the same S. Francesco founded the order that bears his name. He is still remembered for his spirit of humility and poverty, which made him one of the most celebrated saints by the believers. For this reason in Assisi had arisen shrines, churches and places of worship in the most representative of the life of S. Francesco and S. Chiara, from churches built in their honor, the Basilica of Saint Francesco and Saint Chiara, where it is kept their relics.
Also very important is the Cathedral of Saint Rufino, where even today there is the well-known baptismal font where were baptized the two saints of Assisi. The church of Saint Damiano plays, however, a special role: it was the place where S. Francesco heard the call of God praying in front of the crucifix located inside the church where S. Chiara settled the first community of nuns, which later became the Clarisse order. This place had become the main location of the most known miracles of S. Chiara.
