Description
Saint Anastasia the Roman, according to Simeon the Translator, lived in the time of Decius or Diocletian. Unlike Saint Anastasia the Apothecary, who also lived in Rome and whose memory is celebrated on December 22, Saint Anastasia of Rome is celebrated on October 29.The contradictory information about her life is mainly due to the fact that the life of Saint Anastasia of Rome is preserved in about thirty manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 19th century.Simeon the Translator is the author of a biography entitled “Life and State and Martyrdom of the Holy Martyr Anastasia of Rome”, at the end of the 10th AD. According to Simeon there are two Anastasias, one of which belonged to an important Roman family and was married for a short time.Widowed, she divided her father’s property and settled in a monastery. It is even alleged that she was martyred by fire. The second, abandoning her parents and worldly affairs, became a nun from the abbess of a women’s monastery, Sophia, at the age of about 20.He is said to have been put to the test by martyrdom by the ruler Probus. Her body was removed by the old woman Sophia with the help of two Christians, in order to be buried after a few days.
