Description
Saint Angela Merici (1474–1540) was an Italian religious educator and the founder of the Ursuline Order, the first institute of women religious dedicated to the education of girls. She is recognized for her significant contributions to the education and empowerment of women, especially in the context of the Renaissance period in Italy.
Angela Merici was born in Desenzano del Garda, a town in northern Italy. She grew up in a deeply Christian family and, at an early age, became interested in religious life. After the death of her parents, Angela lived with her uncle and continued to pursue her spiritual and educational interests.
In the early 16th century, Angela Merici was deeply concerned with the state of education, particularly the education of girls. She wanted to provide girls, especially from poor families, with the opportunity for religious and intellectual development. At that time, education for girls was rare, and there were very few religious institutions focused on their education.
In 1535, Angela founded the Ursuline Order in Brescia, Italy. The Ursulines were not cloistered nuns but were instead dedicated to teaching and caring for young girls. They lived a form of religious life that allowed them to be active in the community, particularly in schools.
Angela’s approach to education was rooted in Christian values. She focused not just on intellectual development, but also on moral and spiritual formation. She emphasized the importance of personal holiness, prayer, and living a simple, humble life in the service of others. Angela’s motto for her community was “Do not seek to be admired by men, but be admired by God,” highlighting the importance of living out one’s faith in an unassuming way.
Angela Merici died on January 27, 1540, and was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius VII in 1807. Her feast day is celebrated on January 27.
The Ursuline Order has grown into a worldwide network of religious women who continue to focus on education and service. The order’s influence on the education of women has been profound, and their mission of providing education with a strong Christian foundation continues today in many parts of the world.
