Clare of Assisi (1194–1253) was an Italian saint and one of the most important figures in the early Franciscan movement. She was born into a wealthy family in Assisi, Italy, and, inspired by the example of St. Francis of Assisi, she chose to give up her material wealth and live a life of poverty, prayer, and service.
At the age of 18, Clare fled her family home to join Francis and his followers, founding the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares, in 1212. This order was a monastic religious community for women, and it emphasized extreme poverty, simplicity, and devotion to God. Clare became the first abbess of the Poor Clares and led the community with great dedication.
Clare was deeply committed to the ideals of St. Francis, living in strict poverty and fostering a spirit of prayer and humility among her sisters. She also had a profound devotion to the Eucharist and is often remembered for her role in protecting her convent from an invasion in 1240 by the troops of Frederick II. According to tradition, Clare prayed before the Blessed Sacrament, and miraculously, the soldiers fled.
Clare was canonized as a saint by Pope Alexander IV in 1255, just two years after her death. Her feast day is celebrated on August 11. She is recognized as the patron saint of television, because of her devotion to prayer, and is also revered for her role in promoting the Franciscan ideals of poverty, humility, and service.
