Description

The Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) was a pivotal conflict in which the Greek people fought to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire, which had ruled over Greece for nearly four centuries. The war is one of the most significant events in modern Greek history and is celebrated annually in Greece on March 25th as Independence Day.

By the early 19th century, Greek society had been under Ottoman rule since the mid-15th century, following the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Over the centuries, Greeks experienced oppression, heavy taxation, and limitations on their rights, leading to widespread discontent. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, ideas of nationalism and independence spread across Europe, especially following the French Revolution (1789), which inspired various revolutionary movements, including the Greek one.

The Greek War of Independence not only resulted in the creation of the modern Greek state but also became a symbol of national liberation movements across Europe. The revolution has had a lasting impact on Greek identity, culture, and pride. It also marked a key moment in the decline of the Ottoman Empire, paving the way for further nationalist movements in the Balkans.
