Description

The Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, is one of the central figures in Christian theology and devotion. She holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Christians around the world, particularly within the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican traditions. Mary is revered as the Mother of Jesus Christ, who is believed by Christians to be both fully human and fully divine. As such, she is also honored as the Mother of God, a title that emphasizes her unique role in salvation history.

The title Mother of God (Greek: Theotokos, which literally means “God-bearer”) was officially affirmed in Christian doctrine during the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The council declared that Mary, as the mother of Jesus, who is fully divine and fully human, is the Mother of God. This title does not mean that Mary is the mother of God in the sense of originating or creating God. Rather, it affirms that the child she bore was truly God incarnate, and as such, she is honored as the Mother of the Divine Son.

This theological truth is central to the Christian understanding of the Incarnation—the belief that God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.
