Description
Saint Irene of Rome was a Christian martyr and saint who is venerated in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Her feast day is celebrated on May 5th.
According to tradition, Irene was born into a noble family in Rome, but she was raised as a Christian. Her parents, who were pagans, had her marry a Roman official, but she and her husband remained devoted to their Christian faith. After the death of her husband, Irene devoted her life to helping the poor, spreading the Christian faith, and providing comfort to those in need.
During a period of persecution against Christians, Irene was arrested for her beliefs. She was brought before the Roman authorities and was ordered to renounce her faith. Despite the threats and torture, she refused to abandon her Christian beliefs. As a result, she was sentenced to death by beheading.
Saint Irene is remembered for her courage, faith, and compassion. She is often depicted in art as a woman with a sword, symbolizing her martyrdom. She is also considered a protector of women and is invoked for intercession in difficult situations.
