Description
Within the majestic Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem stands out the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the so-called Bethlehemite. The holy icon of the Virgin of Bethlehem is the effigy icon of the Basilica of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and is located in a prominent shrine, on the right side of the southern entrance of the holy Cave of the Nativity.

The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary with the sweet smile and peaceful gaze is portable and is located to the right of the church, placed in a shrine, near the staircase that leads to the lower part of the church, where the Holy Grotto, the place of the Savior’s Birth, is located. The clothing of the image is covered with luxurious fabrics and precious gems. Although there is no clear historical evidence of its origin, tradition links it to the empress of the Russians, Catherine, who, visiting the Holy Land, after a miracle performed by the Virgin Mary, gave her the tsar’s clothes, to be dressed in these “Misses of the world”. According to the same tradition, she also gave away her jewels, in order to be placed on the holy icon.
