One of the four doctors of the Church, Saint Ambrose is one of the most important theological figures of the fourth century. Born in Germany, educated in Rome, he was made the bishop of Milan by the demand of the people, even though he fled from this honor. After his elevation to the episcopate he donated all his lands and money to the poor. It was his meeting with Saint Ambrose that caused the young Augustine to re-evaluate his life and receive baptism at the holy bishop’s hand. Advising his young charge to follow the liturgical customs of Rome when visiting there, he is credited with the saying “When in Rome, do as the Roman.” Saint Ambrose was outspoken and courageous in his defense of the truth faith, defying invading forces, heretics, and even the emperor. Let this Saint Ambrose Icon inspire you to defend the true faith.
