Description
Saint Ambrose was born in Gaul about the year 340, and served as a member of the Roman Senate. In those days, the bishop of Milan was a follower of the heretic Arius.
When the bishop died and the time came to elect his successor, violence broke out between the Orthodox and the followers of Arius. Wanting to restore peace, Ambrose tried to mediate between the factions. As he was speaking to the crowd, a young child was heard crying out, “Ambrose for bishop!” The crowd joined in the cry, and against his will he was elected by acclamation. On successive days he was ordained a deacon, priest, and finally on December 7, 374, bishop.
He wrote many works and fought tirelessly against Arianism for over 20 years until his death on Holy Saturday (April 4) in 397
