Description
The Church celebrates today December 15, together with the memory of Saint Eleftherios and the memory of his mother Saint Anthia.
When Septimius Severus declared persecution against the Christians, Eleftherius boldly checked him. His martyrdom was then ordered, along with his mother Anthia.
They led Saint Eleftherios into the arena and let first a hungry and wild lioness and then a lion devour him.The beasts approached the saint like tame animals and kissed his feet showing their love and sympathy. Seeing the behavior of the lions and hearing the cry of the crowd “great is the God of the Christians”, the emperor ordered the beheading of the confessor of faith in the arena. By cutting off the head, the saint dyed his priestly uniform with the blood of martyrdom. The wise Eleftherios, adorned with the priestly garment dripping from the river of his blood, ran happily to the Despot Christ. His mother Anthia was watching the scene of martyrdom. She then ran and embraced the lifeless body of the martyr and kissed it, “rest in the sweet child, well-born and nourished.” At that moment the merciless executioners beheaded her and thus led her “to heavenly chambers” together with her son.Along with the memory of Agios Eleftherios and Agia Anthia, that of Agios Koremmos is also honored, but also of the Agios two decapitators, who beheaded him and then believed in Christ.
