Description
Saint Layla the day of the name can celebrate November 1, for the feast of all saints.
Saint Layla is believed to have lived during the time of Christian persecutions in Mesopotamia, likely in the 3rd or 4th century, when Christians faced severe oppression under Roman and later Persian rulers. Mesopotamia, the region that includes parts of modern-day Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, was home to vibrant Christian communities, but these communities were often persecuted for their faith.
Layla was a young Christian woman who lived in a small Christian village near the ancient city of Nineveh (modern-day Mosul). From a young age, she was known for her deep faith and devotion. She worked as a teacher, guiding the children in her community, instilling in them the values of love, forgiveness, and humility according to Christian teachings. Her kindness and dedication made her a respected figure among her fellow believers.
As Christian persecution intensified under the rule of the Persian emperor, who had outlawed Christianity, soldiers came to her village. They rounded up the Christians and arrested them. Leila was among those taken, but despite the threat of death, she refused to renounce her faith. The authorities brought her before the emperor, demanding that she abandon her belief in Christ.
Layla stood before the emperor with unwavering courage. When asked to recant her faith, she boldly replied that her love for Christ was greater than any earthly fear or suffering. No amount of torture or threats of death would make her deny her Lord.
Her refusal to renounce her faith led to her martyrdom. Though details of her execution are unclear, it is believed that she was tortured and eventually martyred for her belief in Christ. Her steadfastness in the face of suffering became a powerful witness to the strength of the Christian faith.
