Description

Saint Nikolai Velimirovic (also known as Saint Nikolai of Zica or Saint Nikolai of Ohrid) was a Serbian Orthodox bishop, theologian, and writer, recognized for his profound spiritual writings and deep influence on the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 20th century. He was born in 1880 and passed away in 1956, and he is remembered for his contributions to Orthodox Christianity, as well as his advocacy for Christian values in a time of significant political and social upheaval.
He is venerated as a saint by the Serbian Orthodox Church, and his feast day is celebrated on May 5th.

Saint Nikolai was a prolific writer and theologian. His theological works cover a wide range of topics, from Christian philosophy to the Orthodox understanding of salvation, the nature of God, and the role of the Church in society. His most notable theological works include The Prologue from Ohrid, a collection of daily meditations, homilies, and saints’ lives, which remains a spiritual treasure for many Orthodox Christians.
His writings are deeply rooted in traditional Orthodox Christian teachings, but also reflect his experiences during the tumultuous times of the 20th century.

Saint Nikolai’s deep spirituality and his pastoral care influenced many people during his time. He was known for his compassionate and empathetic approach to guiding people in their faith.
He emphasized the importance of prayer, humility, and love for one’s neighbor as essential components of the Christian life.

During World War II, when the Axis powers occupied Yugoslavia, Saint Nikolai was a vocal opponent of the fascist Ustaše regime. He was eventually imprisoned by the Nazis and later exiled.
Despite his hardships, Saint Nikolai’s faith and spiritual leadership remained unwavering, and his time in exile, particularly in America, was marked by a continued commitment to the Orthodox Church and its mission.

Saint Nikolai Velimirovic was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2003. His feast day is celebrated on May 5th, and he is widely honored in the Serbian Orthodox diaspora.
