Description

Saint Rita of Cascia (1381–1457) is a beloved Catholic saint, known as the patroness of impossible causes, desperate situations, and the abused. Her life and legacy have inspired countless people worldwide, especially those facing great personal trials or difficulties.

Rita was born Margarita Lotti in Cascia, a small town in Umbria, Italy. She was raised in a devout Christian family and aspired to become a nun from a young age. However, her parents arranged a marriage for her to a man named Paolo Mancini, who had a violent temper and a rough character. Despite these difficulties, Rita tried to live her married life with patience and Christian virtue. She bore two sons, but her marriage was fraught with conflict, as her husband was involved in local feuds.

Rita’s life took a dramatic turn when her husband, Paolo, was murdered due to his involvement in these feuds. After Paolo’s death, Rita was left as a widow with two young children. Her sons were determined to avenge their father’s death, but Rita, who was committed to peace and reconciliation, prayed fervently for them to choose forgiveness rather than revenge. Her sons, however, died young, either from illness or the consequences of their involvement in a vendetta.

After the death of her children, Rita turned to God more deeply and joined the Augustinian nuns in Cascia. Although she had long desired to enter religious life, the difficulties of her past, particularly her marriage and the death of her family members, made it a challenge. Rita lived a life of humility, prayer, and penance within the convent. Her deep devotion to Christ and her desire to live a life of suffering for God’s glory led her to have a powerful spiritual experience.

Rita is most famous for receiving a stigmatic wound, a miraculous event that symbolized her union with the suffering of Christ. One day, while in prayer, Rita experienced a deep spiritual connection with the Passion of Christ. She received a wound on her forehead, resembling a crown of thorns, which caused her great physical pain. This wound lasted for the rest of her life, and it was a visible sign of her suffering and love for Christ.

Saint Rita is especially known as the patroness of impossible causes, as she is believed to intercede for those facing situations that seem hopeless. Her life of patience, forgiveness, and trust in God’s will makes her a powerful advocate for those dealing with difficult or seemingly insurmountable challenges. She is also invoked by people in troubled marriages or relationships, as well as those who are suffering from the effects of violence or familial strife.

Saint Rita died on May 22, 1457, and was buried in the convent of the Augustinian nuns in Cascia. Her tomb became a place of pilgrimage, and soon after her death, people began to report miracles attributed to her intercession. Saint Rita was beatified in 1627 by Pope Urban VIII and canonized as a saint in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII.

The feast day of Saint Rita of Cascia is celebrated on May 22 in the Catholic Church.
