Description
Saint Sophocles is one of the Holy Forty Martyrs who were martyred in the year 250 AD, during the reign of Emperor Decius (249-251 AD) and ruler Furtounianus, in Carthage, Africa whose names are: Alexander, Anaxarchus, Anaximenes, Aristides, Demaratus, Democles, Demosthenes, Dionysius, Eteocles, Zeno, Ilias, Heracles, Isaiah, Hephaistion, Themistocles, Theophrastus, Theseus, Thomas, Isocrates, Luke, Macarius, Miltiades, Mnisarchus, Xenophon, Homer, Parmenion, Pelopidas, Pericles, Pindar, Polybius, Polynicus, Prometheus, Socrates, Timotheus, Titus, Philopoimen, Phocion and Chronius. The Saints were arrested because they were Christians and tried with many tortures. But after they had prayed, they destroyed the xoana, the altars and the temples of the pagans. In the end, after horrible torture, they were beheaded.
Their memory is celebrated on April 10.
