Description

Saint Xanthippe is traditionally known as the wife of the philosopher Socrates, though in Christian hagiography, she is sometimes depicted as a martyr.

The most common reference to Xanthippe in Christian tradition associates her with Saints Xanthippe and Polyxena, who are martyred saints of the early Church. However, historical details about Saint Xanthippe are relatively scarce, and the confusion arises because the name Xanthippe has been used in both the ancient Greek tradition and the early Christian tradition for different figures.

In Christian tradition, Saint Xanthippe is often venerated as a martyr, though the specific circumstances of her martyrdom are not always consistent across different sources. In some versions of her story, she is said to have been a devout Christian who faced persecution for her faith, suffering and eventually dying for her beliefs.

Her feast day is observed on September 30th, and she is often honored alongside Saint Polyxena, with whom she was martyred in some accounts.

However, there is some ambiguity regarding her historical identity, and different Christian traditions may offer different details or names associated with her. It’s important to note that her connection to Socrates’ wife, Xanthippe, is not always directly tied to her role in Christian martyrdom, as the two figures may be conflated over time. The story of Saint Xanthippe as a martyr was popular in early Christian communities, particularly those in the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic traditions.
