Saints Sergius and Bacchus were Roman Christian soldiers of the 4th century recognized as martyrs and military saints by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Their feast day is October 7.
According to their iconography, Sergius and Bacchus were officers in Galerius’s army and his favorites, until they were exposed as secret Christians. They were then severely punished, with Bacchus dying by torture and Sergius by beheading.
The story of the saints is told in the Greek text known as The Passion of Sergius and Bacchus. The story takes place during the reign of the Roman emperor Galerius (305 to 311). The work itself may be dated to the mid-5th century.According to the text, Sergius and Bacchus were Roman citizens and senior officers in the Roman army, but their hidden Christianity was discovered when they tried not to accompany a Roman official to a pagan temple. After insisting on not sacrificing to Zeus, they were publicly humiliated by being chained, dressed in women’s clothing, and paraded around the city.
During their exhortation they chant that the Lord “clothed us as brides and through confession united us to Him”. Galerius then sent them to Varbalissus in Mesopotamia in order to make them renounce their faith, but they refused and Bacchus was tortured to death. The next day the spirit of Bacchus appeared to Sergius and encouraged him to stay strong so they could be together forever. Over the next few days, Sergius was tortured and eventually executed in Resafa.
