Description
The Seven Maccabees, also known as the Maccabean Martyrs, are a group of seven brothers and their mother who were martyred during the reign of King Antiochus IV Epiphanes of the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. Their story is told in the biblical book of 2 Maccabees (Chapter 7), which is part of the Deuterocanonical books of the Bible, and is revered in the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and some other Christian traditions.
The brothers and their mother, who is often referred to as Saint Solomonia, are known for their refusal to abandon their Jewish faith and to comply with the king’s decree to forsake the law of Moses by eating pork, a practice considered abominable in Jewish dietary laws. Each brother endured brutal torture and ultimately died for their faith.
The seven brothers were:
- Eleazar
- Abimon
- Gorgias
- Athanasios
- Michaeus
- Elias
- Athenogenes
The mother of the Maccabees, Saint Solomonia, also showed incredible strength and resolve. She witnessed the martyrdom of all of her sons and is honored for her unwavering faith and courage.
The feast day of the Seven Maccabees is celebrated on August 1st in the Eastern Orthodox Church and on August 1st or 2nd in the Roman Catholic Church, depending on the tradition.
The martyrdom of the Seven Maccabees is considered an example of steadfast faith and courage in the face of persecution, and they are honored as saints in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.
