Description
Saint Gabriel the Confessor, also known as Gabriel Urgebadze, was a Georgian Orthodox monk renowned for his profound faith and unconventional path to holiness. Born on August 26, 1929, in Tbilisi, Georgia, he was baptized at the age of 12, despite his father’s atheistic influence. In 1955, he was tonsured a monk and later ordained a hieromonk. During the Soviet era, he openly opposed atheism and communism, notably burning a large portrait of Lenin in 1965, which led to his arrest and torture. After his release, he lived at the Samtavro Monastery in Mtskheta, where he continued his ascetic life, offering spiritual guidance and performing miracles. He passed away on November 2, 1995, and was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2012. His feast day is celebrated on November 2.
