Description
Panagia Soumela, also known as the Virgin of Soumela, is one of the most important and venerated icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The icon, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, has been a symbol of deep faith and devotion for centuries. It is believed to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke, and is considered to be one of the oldest and most miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary.
The history of the Panagia Soumela icon is intertwined with the monastery of Soumela, which was founded in the 4th century in the Pontus region (modern-day Turkey). The monastery, located on the slopes of Mount Mela, became a major pilgrimage site and a center of Christian spirituality. According to tradition, the icon was brought to the monastery by two monks from the city of Trebizond, Barnabas and Sophronios, who had fled from persecution in the 4th century. They carried the icon to the remote mountain location where the monastery was built, and it was believed that the icon had miraculous powers.
The Panagia Soumela icon was revered for its miraculous healings and interventions, and many miracles are attributed to the Virgin’s intercession through the icon. The monastery of Soumela flourished for centuries and became one of the most significant centers of Orthodox Christianity in the region. Pilgrims from all over the world traveled to Soumela to pray before the icon, seeking healing, comfort, and divine intervention.
However, during the 20th century, due to the geopolitical changes and the forced population exchanges between Greece and Turkey, the Greek Orthodox community in the Pontus region was forced to leave their ancestral homes. In 1923, the Greek inhabitants of the region were relocated, and the monastery of Soumela was abandoned. The icon of Panagia Soumela was eventually moved to Greece, where it was placed in the Monastery of Soumela in Northern Greece, in the region of Veria (Imathia), in 1951.
Today, the icon of Panagia Soumela continues to be a symbol of faith, hope, and resilience for Orthodox Christians. The Monastery of Soumela in Greece remains a pilgrimage site, where the faithful come to honor the Virgin Mary and seek her protection and blessings. Every year, on August 15th, the feast day of the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Assumption of Mary), thousands of pilgrims gather at the Monastery of Soumela in Greece for a grand celebration in honor of Panagia Soumela.
The Panagia Soumela icon remains a powerful symbol of the deep connection between the faithful and the Virgin Mary, whose protection and intercession are sought by millions of Orthodox Christians worldwide.
