Description

Theodoros Kolokotronis (1770–1843) was a prominent Greek general and one of the most important figures in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire (1821–1829). He played a crucial role in leading the Greek forces to victory, earning him the title of “The Father of the Greek Revolution.”

Born in the region of Morea (Peloponnese), Kolokotronis came from a family with a history of fighting against the Ottomans. He became an experienced soldier at a young age, initially involved in resistance against the Ottomans in the 18th century.

When the Greek War of Independence broke out in 1821, Kolokotronis emerged as a key military leader. He led Greek forces in several critical battles, including the Siege of Tripolitsa, one of the first significant victories for the Greek rebels. His leadership and military acumen earned him the respect of both his own people and European supporters of the Greek cause.

However, Kolokotronis’s relationship with other leaders of the Greek Revolution was complex. His opposition to the political factions that emerged after the revolution, combined with disputes over leadership and power, led to periods of tension and even imprisonment. Despite these challenges, his reputation as a hero of the revolution remained strong.

Kolokotronis is celebrated in Greece not only for his military achievements but also for his role in the creation of a free Greek state. His legacy endures as one of the central figures in Greek history, symbolizing the struggle for independence and national identity.
