Description

The “Assuage My Sorrows” Icon, celebrated on January 25th, is one of the treasured religious icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church, currently housed in the Saint Nicholas Odrino Monastery, located in the Orel Diocese, Karachev district.

Originally belonging to Count Nicholas Borisovitch Samoilov until 1784, the icon was highly revered by him as a holy object, renowned for its miraculous properties, especially its healing powers. For a time, it resided in the Count’s home in Moscow, where many faithful visited to seek its blessings. Over time, the icon’s fame for performing miracles grew.

In order to honor the icon, Count Samoilov moved it to his estate near the Saint Nicholas Odrino Monastery. There, he personally funded the construction of a heated chapel dedicated to the “Assuage My Sorrows” Icon, which was part of the monastery’s main church, or katholikon. Later, Count Samoilov donated the icon to the monastery, ensuring its protection and continued veneration by the faithful.

The icon is celebrated locally in the monastery on two occasions each year: on January 25th and October 9th. These dates have become significant, and many pilgrims travel to the Saint Nicholas Odrino Monastery to honor the icon, seeking comfort and healing through its intercession.

The “Assuage My Sorrows” Icon continues to be a source of spiritual consolation and miracles, drawing the faithful to the monastery in devotion to the Virgin Mary, whose intercession is believed to alleviate suffering and sorrow.
