Description

“The True Vine” is a title and symbol used by Jesus Christ in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospel of John, to describe His relationship with His followers and His role as the source of spiritual life. The metaphor appears in John 15:1-8, where Jesus speaks to His disciples during the Last Supper and explains the vital connection between Himself and His followers.

In this passage, Jesus says:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:1-5, NIV)

Jesus as the True Vine: In this metaphor, Jesus identifies Himself as the “True Vine.” This suggests that He is the authentic and life-giving source of spiritual sustenance. He contrasts Himself with false or insufficient sources, indicating that only by being connected to Him can one bear spiritual fruit and receive eternal life. In the context of Jewish tradition, the vine was a symbol of Israel, but Jesus emphasizes that He is the true and perfect fulfillment of that symbol.
