Description
Mannès de Guzmán, born around 1165/1170 and died on August 2, 1234 or 1235, is a Spanish Dominican priest, son of Félix Nuñez de Guzmán and Jeanne d’Aza. Brother of St. Dominic, he is one of his first disciples. After thinking of becoming a Cistercian in Gumiel de Izan, he entered the order of preachers and took part in its spread, especially in France and Spain. Beatified in 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI, it is celebrated on August 18.
Brother of Blood and Faith
With his brothers, he received the foundations of his education from his mother and maternal uncle Gonzalve d’Aza, a priest in Gumiel de Izan.
A discreet and sensitive man, endowed with a true sense of service, sober but curious, with a true sense of community life and obedience, he was sent by St. Dominic to Paris. He then participated in the founding of the Convent of St. James, the first Dominican institution in Paris, of which he became the prior.
Recalled in Spain, he consolidated the establishment of Dominican houses with his brother Miguel de Fabre.
At the same time, he advises St. Dominic on the form to be taken by the female branch of the order. In 1219 he founded a convent of nuns in Madrid, of which he became the spiritual director.
In 1234, after the canonization of his brother, he proposed the construction of a church in his memory, in Calaruega. He died soon after. His remains rest in the monastery of Gumiel de Izan.
