Description
To convince the bishop, Juan Diego was instructed to gather roses from the hillside, which were not in season. When he presented them to the bishop, an image of the Virgin Mary was miraculously imprinted on his tilma (cloak). This image, often referred to as the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is now housed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
The image is highly significant in Catholicism, particularly in Latin America. It symbolizes the blending of indigenous culture and Catholicism, as the Virgin Mary appeared to a native man and used local symbols. The Virgin of Guadalupe is seen as a symbol of hope, compassion, and protection, and her feast day is celebrated on December 12th.
