Description
Saint Athena is indeed one of the 40 Holy Virgins, also known as the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. These were a group of Christian soldiers who lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Licinius in the early 4th century.
The 40 Holy Virgins were a group of young Christian women who were martyred for their faith in Sebaste, a city in present-day Turkey. According to tradition, they were tortured and executed for refusing to renounce their Christian beliefs. Each of the 40 women is venerated for her courage, purity, and unwavering faith.
Saint Athena’s role within the group is often recognized for her virtuous and selfless commitment to Christ. The 40 Virgins are remembered for their collective sacrifice, showing their steadfastness in their devotion to Christianity even in the face of cruel persecution.
Saint Athena, alongside the others, is honored on March 9 in the Orthodox Christian calendar, a day dedicated to remembering their martyrdom and their contributions to the early Christian Church.
