Description

Saint Florus (or Saint Floros) is a Christian martyr and saint who, along with his companion Saint Laurus, is venerated for his courage and faith during the time of Roman persecution. Their feast day is celebrated on February 18 in the Eastern Orthodox Church and on May 18 in the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Saint Florus and his companion Saint Laurus were Christian martyrs who lived in the 3rd century, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Decius (249–251 AD), a period known for intense persecution of Christians. Florus and Laurus were both stone masons by profession and lived in Illyria, an ancient region that roughly corresponds to modern-day Albania and Croatia.
  • According to tradition, the two saints were arrested for their Christian faith and refused to renounce their belief in Jesus Christ despite harsh interrogation and threats of torture. Their steadfast faith and refusal to participate in pagan rituals led to their execution.
  • The exact details of their martyrdom are not entirely clear, but they are believed to have been executed by decapitation. Their willingness to die rather than forsake Christ became an inspiration for future generations of Christians.

  • Saint Florus and Saint Laurus are particularly venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, where they are seen as examples of unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
  • Their lives highlight the important early Christian value of martyrdom, where individuals were willing to sacrifice their lives rather than compromise their faith. As stone masons, their association with craftsmanship has also led to their patronage of stone workers, masons, and builders.
  • In some regions, especially in Greece and the Balkans, the feast of Saint Florus and Saint Laurus is celebrated with prayers and liturgical observances, often emphasizing their role as protectors of workers in the construction and stone industries.
