Saint Laura of Cordoba (Spanish: Santa Laura de Córdoba; died 864) was a Spanish Christian who lived in Muslim Spain during the 9th century. She was born in Córdoba, and became a nun at Cuteclara after her husband died, eventually rising to become an abbess. She was martyred by Muslims who took her captive and scalded her to death by placing her in a vat of boiling pitch. Her feast day is on 19 October; she is one of the Martyrs of Córdoba.She is commemorated by the Estadio Santa Laura (“Saint Laura Stadium”) in Santiago, Chile and the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works in northern Chile.Saint Laura was born in Córdoba, Spain, during a time when the region was under Moorish (Muslim) rule. Little is known about her early life, but she became a widow at a young age. Seeking a life of spiritual dedication, Laura entered the monastery of Santa Maria de Cuteclara in Córdoba, where she became a nun and later the abbess.
As abbess, Laura was known for her leadership and deep spirituality. She guided her fellow nuns with wisdom and compassion, fostering a community centered on prayer, humility, and service. Her commitment to Christ and her community made her a model of virtue and holiness.
During Laura’s time, Christians in Córdoba faced increasing persecution under the Islamic rulers. The rulers demanded that Christians renounce their faith and convert to Islam. Laura, steadfast in her devotion to Christ, refused to abandon her beliefs.Her boldness in proclaiming her faith led to her arrest. After enduring various forms of torture, Laura was condemned to death. In 864, she was executed by being thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. Her martyrdom solidified her status as a symbol of faith and courage.
