Description
Born blind in 660, Odile was rejected by her father, the Duke of Alsace, who wanted a boy. Exiled, she recovered her sight at the time of her baptism. Reconciled with her father, she founded a monastery (Mount Ste Odile) in the fortress of Hohenbourg, on a summit of the Alsatian Vosges and then that of Niedermunster, at the foot of the mountain. She died in 720. Since then, the Mont Ste Odile is a lighthouse for Alsace, of which Ste Odile is the patron saint.
Tropaire in Sainte Odile of Alsace (Tone 2):
Blind promised to death at birth
By your father who did not want a cripple
You have regained sight by holy baptism.
You found your family and converted it.
Then you were a Higumen of the convent of Hohenburg.
Holy Odile, pray the Lord to save our souls!
