Description
The Last Supper is one of the most significant events in Christian tradition, marking the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his crucifixion. This event is recounted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and is central to Christian theology, as it marks the institution of the Eucharist (Holy Communion).
- Institution of the Eucharist: During the Last Supper, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it, giving it to his disciples with the words, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” He then took a cup of wine, saying, “This is the blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” This act is commemorated in Christian liturgy as the sacrament of Communion.
- The Betrayal: Jesus also foretold that one of his disciples would betray him. Judas Iscariot, who would later betray Jesus to the authorities for thirty pieces of silver, was revealed during this meal.
- Washing of the Feet: In the Gospel of John, Jesus performs the humble act of washing the feet of his disciples, teaching them about servitude and humility, and instructing them to love and serve one another.
- The New Commandment: Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” This is often referred to as the commandment of love, which is central to Christian life.
- Jesus’ Farewell Discourse: The Last Supper is also the setting for Jesus’ farewell teachings to his disciples, in which he speaks of the coming of the Holy Spirit, the importance of remaining in him (the Vine), and the promise of eternal life.
